I think freedom of sexuality is something that we all need and very few of us have

I think sexual pleasure is a legitimate thing to want and ethically pursue

I do not judge people for the (consensual) sex that they have or want

I will not tolerate slut-shaming

I will not tolerate hatred of people based on gender or orientation (including asexual)

I will not tolerate hatred of sex workers

I believe comprehensive, honest, non-judgmental sex education is necessary for public health and happiness

I think understanding of sexual consent—what it is, why it matters—is sorely lacking in society and crucially important

I reject preconceptions of what kind of sexuality a person should have, whether these preconceptions are based on gender, age, culture, disability, survivor status, or basically anything else

I value people’s individual freedom of choice in determining their sex lives (including the choices not to have sex)

What I Don’t Mean

Everyone should have sex

Everyone should have kinky, non-monogamous, exhibitionistic, pansexual sex

Accepting someone’s sexuality means you have to participate in it, watch them engage in it, or hear about it in detail

Nothing related to sex is ever hurtful for anyone

Feminism should be all about sex

Sex fixes everything

I like this. We need to be a lot more clear about what “sex-positive” does (or doesn’t) mean. This isn’t the last word, but it’s a good start.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Red Equals Signs:

I really did cringe when I first started seeing the red squares cropping up on Facebook and Twitter in support of same-sex marriage. I’m for marriage equality, but at first it seemed like such an empty and self-indulgent gesture. And then there was the idea of allowing the Human Rights Campaign—notorious for their conservatism, classism, transphopia and other sins—to brand the whole cause with their corporate logo. I started changing my mind when I saw people enthusiastically reinvent the symbol in their own image. That’s painted a picture of communities and people who are active, imaginative, radical, and who will not be contained by the vision of the HRC’s Board of Directors. Check out the gallery for an idea of what I mean.

Talley declined to comment about the letter, but Eagle owner Patrick Lanagan responded with this statement:

“Eagle Portland is focusing on other issues at this time Kudos to those most active in our fight for equality.”

When asked follow-up questions, Lanagan said: “The Eagle has no further comment.”

The Marvin: A Unit to Measure Depression:

Everything needs some form of measurement; just saying “I’m depressed” doesn’t say anything. That could mean anything from “I’m sad because my goldfish died,” to “I’d dearly love to blow my fucking brains out.” Therefore, I’ve devised a unit of depression: The Marvin. If you know your Douglas Adams, you should get the reference at once: Marvin, the Paranoid Android, from Adams’s cult novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and its assorted sequels. But although most people know Adams’s work from the books, Hitchhiker’s Guide started out as a radio series on the BBC, and it’s the portrayal of Marvin by Steven Moore in that series that makes him the perfect index for my depression. Besides the relentless sense of futility and despair in the character himself, the voice is so absolutely spot-on, pitch-perfect that it’s like a kind of emotional onomatopoeia for what’s going on in my head. The dominant trait is not sadness, but an indomitable sense of weariness, as though just assembling the words in his head, never mind speaking them, is a huge burden for Marvin.

The marvin is a negative measurement. In an ideal world, you would be living at 0 marvins, perhaps even negative marvins. I don’t see that happening. Depression has been part of my brain for so long that I can barely even imagine it not being there. It’s become the foundation and the skeleton that I’ve built all my other thoughts and experiences around.

Marvin the character is kind of like the platonic ideal of depression, so if you’ve reached a full marvin, that’s a really bad day. Those are the days when I can barely move, because the depression is just bearing down on me so badly. And in a way, the inability to take any positive action is a good thing. On some really bad days, I’ve said that I feel like my depression is the only thing that’s keeping me alive. I say it with a certain wry humor, but it’s not really a joke. On those days, I might run mental film clips of swallowing the business end of a 9mm or slitting my wrists, but if the gun was sitting fully loaded on a table six feet away, it would be a massive effort on my part to walk across the room and pick it up.

The first step is to learn the facts, and then to get angry and to ask ourselves, as progressives and caring human beings, what we can do about the relentless transfer of wealth to a small group of well-positioned Americans.

1. $2.13 per hour vs. $3,000,000.00 per hour

Each of the Koch brothers saw his investments grow by $6 billion in one year, which is three million dollars per hour based on a 40-hour ‘work’ week. They used some of the money to try to kill renewable energystandards around the country.

Their income portrays them, in a society measured by economic status, as a million times more valuable than the restaurant server who cheers up our lunch hours while hoping to make enough in tips to pay the bills.

A comparison of top and bottom salaries within large corporations is much less severe, but a lot more common. For CEOs and minimum-wage workers, the difference is $5,000.00 per hour vs. $7.25 per hour.

2. A single top income could buy housing for every homeless person in the U.S.

On a winter day in 2012 over 633,000 people were homeless in the United States. Based on an annual single room occupancy (SRO) cost of $558 per month, any ONE of the ten richest Americans would have enough with his 2012 income to pay for a room for every homeless person in the U.S. for the entire year. These ten rich men together made more than our entire housing budget.

For anyone still believing “they earned it,” it should be noted that most of the Forbes 400 earnings came from minimally-taxed, non-job-creating capital gains.

3. The poorest 47% of Americans have no wealth

In 1983 the poorest 47% of America had $15,000 per family, 2.5 percent of the nation’s wealth.

In 2009 the poorest 47% of America owned ZERO PERCENT of the nation’s wealth (their debt exceeded their assets).

At the other extreme, the 400 wealthiest Americans own as much wealth as 80 million families — 62% of America. The reason, once again, is the stock market. Since 1980 the American GDP has approximatelydoubled. Inflation-adjusted wages have gone down. But the stock market has increased by over ten times, and the richest quintile of Americans owns 93% of it.

4. The U.S. is nearly the most wealth-unequal country in the entire world

Out of 141 countries, the U.S. has the 4th-highest degree of wealth inequality in the world, trailing only Russia, Ukraine, and Lebanon.

Yet the financial industry keeps creating new wealth for its millionaires. According to the authors of theGlobal Wealth Report, the world’s wealth has doubled in ten years, from $113 trillion to $223 trillion, and is expected to reach $330 trillion by 2017.

5. A can of soup for a black or Hispanic woman, a mansion and yacht for the businessman

That’s literally true. For every one dollar of assets owned by a single black or Hispanic woman, a member of the Forbes 400 has over forty million dollars.

Minority families once had substantial equity in their homes, but after Wall Street caused the housing crash, median wealth fell 66% for Hispanic households and 53% for black households. Now the average single black or Hispanic woman has about $100 in net worth.

What to do?

End the capital gains giveaway, which benefits the wealthy almost exclusively.

Institute a Financial Speculation Tax, both to raise needed funds from a currently untaxed subsidy on stock purchases, and to reduce the risk of the irresponsible trading that nearly brought down the economy.

Perhaps above all, we progressives have to choose one strategy and pursue it in a cohesive, unrelenting attack on greed. Only this will heal the ugly gash of inequality that has split our country in two.

Protesting at a porn shop and protesting at a strip club are two different things. Protests at porn shops won’t directly impact any women who are working in porn (any impact would be indirect and dispersed), but protests at strip clubs will negatively impact the women who work there that day, because it would drive down business. Who is going to supplement their income if they are unable to feed their family or pay their rent because of the protest? Did organizers speak with the dancers to figure out how we can support them rather than harming them and their families? That seems like an important step for any feminist organizing.
